Interrogations

A friend recently sent me this message:
"I heard a story once about a pastor who served as an interrogator in WWII or Vietnam and worked from a totally different paradigm where he truly treated the prisoners kindly even if they weren't willing to talk. In the long run he ended up being way more effective in getting info while the prisoners were truly treated with respect and not as enemies. He advocated for this approach to be accepted by the military but it obviously was not. Do you have any idea what I'm talking about and what his name is/was?"
